Meet Riham Nasser, BCBA at Behavior Interventions
- Why did you choose this career path? I chose this career path because I have always been passionate about helping individuals develop important life skills and reach their full potential. One of the most rewarding aspects of being a BCBA is seeing the progress my clients make over time, whether it’s learning to communicate, gaining independence, or improving social skills. It’s incredible to witness those moments when my client gains a skill, and experiences success.
Another reason I chose to become a BCBA is the collaborative nature of the work. I love working closely with families, educators, and other professionals to create individualized plans that support long-term success. Each client is unique, and being able to tailor interventions to their needs makes this job both challenging and fulfilling
Ultimately, I became a BCBA because I wanted a career where I could make a meaningful impact, continue learning and growing, and help individuals lead more independent and fulfilling lives.
- What’s your favorite part about this job? My favorite part of this job is seeing the progress my clients make over time and knowing that I am making a positive impact on their lives. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch them develop new skills, gain independence, and achieve their goals. I also enjoy the problem-solving aspect of ABA—analyzing behavior, identifying patterns, and adjusting interventions to best support each individual.
Beyond that, I appreciate the variety in my work—no two cases are exactly the same, which keeps the job engaging and allows me to continuously learn and grow as a professional. I also love the meaningful connections I build with the individuals I work with, seeing their confidence grow, and celebrating their successes along the way.
- How do you collaborate with other members of the Behavior Interventions team? Collaboration with my team is essential to providing the best care for my clients. When working with my RBTs, I make sure to have regular check-ins to discuss progress, challenges, and any adjustments needed to the intervention plan. I ask for their input on how strategies are working in the natural environment and encourage them to share any ideas they have for improving the consistency of implementation. I also provide ongoing coaching and support to ensure that RBTs feel confident in their role and are clear on how to apply behavior strategies effectively.
Although other BCBAs within BII don’t work directly with my clients, we collaborate in different ways. I regularly connect with my colleagues to brainstorm ideas, especially when I encounter complex cases or need new strategies. They may offer fresh perspectives or share experiences from similar cases that help guide my approach.
- How does your job make a lasting impact on the lives of the children you work with and their families? My job makes a lasting impact by helping individuals develop essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. Through evidence-based interventions, I work to teach my clients how to communicate effectively, manage emotions, build social skills, and gain independence in everyday activities. These skills not only improve their overall quality of life but also help them navigate their environment with greater confidence and ease.
For families, the impact is equally significant. By collaborating closely with them, I help parents and caregivers understand their child’s behavior and how to support positive change. The strategies I provide enable families to manage challenging behaviors, reduce stress, and create more positive, rewarding interactions at home. Over time, families often gain a deeper understanding of their child’s needs, which empowers families with the tools they need to continue supporting their child’s growth beyond our therapy sessions.
- For anyone considering becoming a BCBA, what advice do you have for them? Becoming a BCBA is a rewarding career, but it also requires dedication, patience, and a genuine passion for helping others. It’s a field that requires constant learning and critical thinking, so being curious and open to new ideas is essential.
I would also recommend gaining as much hands-on experience as possible, whether through internships, supervised fieldwork, or working closely with other professionals. The more you can practice applying behavior analysis techniques in real-world settings, the more confident and effective you’ll become.
Lastly, be patient with yourself. The journey to becoming a BCBA can be challenging, but the impact you make on individuals’ lives is incredibly rewarding. Stay committed to your growth, and you’ll find great satisfaction in seeing the positive changes you can help create for others.
One more important piece of advice is to prioritize self-care. The work we do can be emotionally and mentally demanding, and it’s essential to take time to recharge. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup, so make sure to invest in your own well-being along the way.
