There’s usually many myths surrounding early interventions. In many cases, it’s these myths that may change the opinion of parents and caregivers when deciding which services to choose. However, it is important for service providers to debunk these myths.

Here we will present a few myths and the facts behind them.

Myth

EIBI is a short-term intervention that does not yield lasting benefits.

Fact

Research has shown that EIBI can lead to significant and enduring improvements in cognitive, social, and adaptive functioning for children with autism. Long-term studies have demonstrated sustained gains well into adulthood for individuals who received early intervention.

Myth

EIBI is only effective when delivered in clinical settings by trained professionals.

Fact

While professional expertise is valuable, EIBI can also be implemented successfully in naturalistic settings such as homes, schools, and community settings. Family involvement and collaboration with educators are crucial components of effective EIBI programs, promoting generalization of skills across different environments.

Myth

EIBI is a one-size-fits-all approach that disregards the unique characteristics and strengths of each child.

Fact

Effective EIBI programs are highly individualized, taking into account the specific strengths, challenges, and preferences of each child. Tailoring interventions to the child’s needs maximizes the effectiveness of the treatment.
