Meet Debbie R, BCBA at Behavior Interventions

  1. Why did you choose this career path? I chose this career path because I genuinely want to help people and make a meaningful difference in their lives. I want individuals and families to feel supported and not alone in their journey. I believe strongly in the science of ABA and its power to help people reach their full potential—when it’s done with compassion, respect, and joy. For me, it’s important to always consider each person’s culture, values, and unique needs, and to provide support in a way that is humane, collaborative, and empowering.
  1. What’s your favorite part about your BCBA job? My favorite part of this profession is the opportunity to work with children and their families from diverse backgrounds, each with unique dynamics, cultures, and needs. I value the process of understanding each family’s individual circumstances and tailoring support accordingly. It is especially rewarding to observe meaningful progress over time and to witness children and families grow, gain confidence, and thrive. Being able to contribute to that growth and to positive, lasting change is what makes this work deeply fulfilling for me.
  1. How do you collaborate with other members of the Behavior Interventions team?  I collaborate closely with other members of the Behavior Interventions team through regular communication, including brainstorming, sharing ideas, strategies, and resources via email, training, and team meetings. We work together to review data, discuss progress, and problem-solve challenges to ensure consistency and high-quality services. Supporting one another and maintaining open, collaborative communication helps us provide the best possible outcomes for the individuals and families we serve.
  1. How does your job make a lasting impact on the lives of the children you work with and their families? My work creates a lasting impact by helping children and their families build confidence, resilience, and a sense of capability. Through consistent support and skill-building, they learn that they can face difficult situations and emotions and still move forward. They also learn that they are not alone in this process. By teaching practical skills and fostering independence, I help children discover their own potential and develop the confidence to navigate challenges, regulate emotions, and handle hard things in their lives. These skills stay with them and continue to support their growth long after services end.
  1. For anyone considering becoming a BCBA, what advice do you have for them? For anyone considering becoming a BCBA, my advice is to always meet families and children where they are. Be respectful of their needs, their culture, and their learning history. Lead with compassion, honesty, and joy—families and children can truly feel when you care and when you are genuinely invested in their success. Remember that it is a privilege to work with the families we serve. Believe in the science of ABA, and implement it with empathy, respect, and humanity. When science is delivered with kindness and care, it creates meaningful and lasting change.
