Meet Dejanelle A, BCBA at Behavior Interventions

  1. Why did you choose this career path? I have always known that there were 3 things I required personally in a fulfilling career: something that gave me the ability to help others, that required problem-solving on a day-to-day basis yet allowed for creative freedom, and something rooted in the science of human behavior. That being said, this career path essentially fell into my lap. ABA encompasses all of these requirements perfectly. I recall my very first session, just starting out as a behavior technician. It was inexplicably different from any sort of work I had ever done before. Yet, even after that very first day, I remember coming home and thinking to myself how rewarding it would be once we got to where we were headed
  1. What’s your favorite part about your BCBA job? Most definitely how rewarding the process is to meet and touch so many lives, be given the opportunity to individually tailor programs based on each learner, and get to watch the success thereafter is the most rewarding feeling in the world. Not a day goes by where I don’t feel grateful for the opportunity to help others maximize their potential. Even the hard days at Behavior Interventions aren’t so difficult with the support of such an amazing team.
  1. How do you collaborate with other members of the Behavior Interventions team? Collaboration and culture at Behavior Interventions have always been some of the things I love most about the company. Even when I first started here years ago as a technician, it was evident how supported and valued I was. I had the opportunity to grow underneath BCBAs who were always willing to listen, provide support, and take feedback. Now that I am a BCBA myself, I can say the same about my new clinical supervisors. When I am stuck, there is always someone there to offer me support; and when I succeed, there is always someone there to celebrate with me.
  1. How does your job make a lasting impact on the lives of the children you work with and their families? As a clinician, I have the ability to form meaningful relationships with my children and their families, and provide them with skills and strategies that will allow them to grow- that they will be able to carry with them through the rest of their lives. The impact of our work is evident everyday- whether it is hearing a young learner tell their caregiver “I love you” for the first time, or watching parents begin to confidently apply intervention strategies that we have worked with them on… there are moments everyday that remind me exactly why I chose this field.
  1. For anyone considering becoming a BCBA, what advice do you have for them? Take care of yourself! If you are considering a career as a BCBA, I would have to assume that you care greatly about others and helping them succeed, as that is such an important part of the job. Oftentimes, it becomes easy to take hard days personally. Just remember, setbacks are all part of the process, and you will experience tough days, but you can’t let that affect your confidence in yourself as a clinician. Be mindful, practice self-care, and believe in yourself and the impact you can have on your families!
